Fidyah Calculation and Payment via Zakat Thailand
1. Understanding Fidyah
Fidyah is a religious obligation for those who are unable to fast during Ramadan due to valid reasons, such as chronic illness or old age. Understanding this principle ensures that the obligation is fulfilled correctly and that the beneficiaries—the poor and needy—receive assistance according to Islamic intent.
The primary objective of Fidyah is to compensate for missed fasts by providing staple food as a means of sustenance. This is typically contributed in the form of local staples, such as white rice or sticky rice, ensuring direct support for the livelihood of those in need.
2. Differing Scholarly Views on Fidyah Quantities
There are several recognized scholarly opinions regarding the amount of food required per missed day. These variations arise from different interpretations of historical measurements across Islamic schools of thought (Madhhabs). Zakat Thailand provides these options so users can choose based on their personal conviction:
Required Amount per Missed Day:
- Maliki & Shafi’i: 0.75 kg (750 grams)
- Hanbali / Sheikh Bin Baz / Sheikh Uthaymeen: 1.5 kg
- Hanafi: 3 kg
3. How to Calculate Fidyah on the Platform
The Zakat Thailand calculator is designed to simplify the process of converting food quantities into the required monetary value. Follow these steps:
- Enter Rice Price: In the field 'Price of rice/sticky rice per kg,' enter the price of the rice you usually consume (e.g., 35 THB). This should be the same rate used for Zakat al-Fitr.
- Select Weight: Choose the weight corresponding to your preferred scholarly view (as listed in Section 2).
- Enter Missed Days: Input the total number of days you were unable to fast.
- Review Total: The system will automatically display the 'Fidyah per day' and the 'Total Amount' due.
Example: If you choose the Hanafi view (3 kg) at a rice price of 35 THB/kg, the calculation for 30 missed days would be:
- Fidyah per day: 3 kg x 35 THB = 105 THB
- Total for 30 days: 105 THB x 30 days = 3,150 THB
4. Recommendations for Choosing the Quantity
While all mentioned scholarly views are valid, those who are uncertain which to choose may consider the Hanafi view (3 kg) for the following reasons:
- Maximum Benefit: It provides the largest quantity of food, offering greater support to the poor.
- Consistency: The value aligns closely with the standard rate of Zakat al-Fitr, ensuring a robust contribution to the community.
Zakat Thailand is committed to making your Fidyah fulfillment simple, accurate, and spiritually rewarding. You can complete your payment immediately after calculation to ensure timely aid to those in need.
