Kaffarah Calculation and Payment via Zakat Thailand
1. What is Kaffarah?
Kaffarah is a "compensation" or "penalty" paid for specific violations of Islamic principles. It differs from Fidyah, which is specifically a compensation for missed fasting days.
2. Cases Requiring Kaffarah
There are four main cases where Kaffarah must be paid. The penalty is calculated based on the number of beneficiaries (needy individuals) involved:
- 2.1 Broken Oaths or Ila’ (Vow of continence): Provide for 10 needy people.
- 2.2 Marital Relations during Ramadan (Daytime): Provide for 60 needy people.
- 2.3 Zihar (Inappropriate comparisons regarding one's spouse): Provide for 60 needy people.
- 2.4 Dam Hajj (Violations during Hajj in Mecca): Provide for 60 needy people.
3. Feeding Requirements by School of Thought (Madhhab)
The amount of staple food (rice) required per person varies according to the different schools of thought:
- Maliki & Shafi’i: 0.75 kg per person.
- Hanbali: 1.5 kg per person.
- Hanafi: 3 kg per person.
4. How to Calculate and Pay via Zakat Thailand
Follow these steps on our platform:
- Enter Food Price: Input the current price of rice per kilogram (in THB) that you usually consume.
- Select Weight: Choose the weight based on your preferred Madhhab (0.75, 1.5, or 3 kg).
- Automatic Calculation: The system will display the "Kaffarah per person."
- Specify Recipients: Select the number of people (10 or 60) based on your specific case.
- Review Total: The system will calculate the total amount due.
- Proceed to Payment: Click "Add to Cart" to combine items or "Pay Now" to complete the transaction.
Example: If you choose the Hanafi view (3 kg) and the rice price is 35 THB/kg, the cost per person is 105 THB. For 60 people, the total payment would be 6,300 THB.
5. Recommendation for Choosing the Amount
While all scholarly views are valid, we recommend following the Hanafi view (3 kg) for two key reasons:
- Maximum Benefit: It provides the highest amount of food to those in need.
- Consistency: The value is closely aligned with the standard rate of Zakat al-Fitr.
6. Historical Context
During the time of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), a companion who broke his fast through marital relations was offered three options in order: freeing a slave, fasting for 60 consecutive days, or—the most accessible option—feeding 60 needy people.
